Quality Standard RYL

Currently, most Estonian construction contracts use references to the Ryl guidelines on quality requirements for construction work, developed and implemented in Finland. RYL or "Rakentamisen yleiset laatuvaatimukset" translates from Finnish as ”General requirements for the quality of construction work". They are mostly translated into Estonian, constantly updated and updated in accordance with new conditions.

RYL 1 Quality Standard

RYL 1 is the highest quality standard for painting and finishing work used in Estonia. This level of quality demands flawless execution at every stage of the process, with a final result that must be impeccable and meet the highest standards.

Quality characteristics of RYL 1 in painting work:
1. Surface Preparation:
The surface must be meticulously prepared, including leveling, sanding, and the removal of all defects. Any irregularities, cracks, and other imperfections must be completely addressed before painting begins.
Attention is given to the smallest details to create an absolutely smooth and even surface, ready for the final coating application.

2. Leveling and Sanding:
Leveling and sanding are performed with exceptional care to ensure the surface is perfectly smooth. Multiple layers of filler may be applied and then sanded to achieve a flawless texture with no visible defects.

3. Paiting:
Several layers of paint are applied, with each layer needing to be even and flawless. Only high-quality materials are used. The coating must be entirely uniform, with no visible brush or roller marks, drips, or streaks. The color and texture execution must be perfect.

4. Quality Assessment:
The surface is evaluated under good lighting and at a close distance, usually less than one meter. At this distance, no defects should be visible. The surface should appear perfect even under close scrutiny, meeting high aesthetic standards.

5. Application:
RYL 1 is used in premium projects, such as luxury housing, high-end offices, prestigious commercial properties, and other spaces where appearance is paramount. This standard is suitable for public buildings, museums, galleries, theaters, and other venues where impeccable finishing is crucial.

Conclusion:
RYL 1 represents the highest level of quality in painting work, requiring perfect surface preparation and flawless execution of all finishing stages. This standard is used in situations where an impeccable appearance and aesthetics are essential, making it ideal for top-tier projects.

RYL 2 Quality Standard

RYL 2 is a standard used to determine the quality of finishing work, including painting, in Estonia. This quality level defines requirements that are considered average and suitable for most standard finishing projects.

Quality characteristics of RYL 2 in painting work:
1. Surface Preparation:
Surfaces must be prepared with their intended use in mind, but the requirements for perfect smoothness and evenness are less strict compared to higher levels (e.g., RYL 1). Small irregularities may be acceptable if they are not noticeable during a regular inspection.

2. Leveling and Sanding:
The surface is leveled and sanded, but minor deviations and small defects are allowed, which are only visible upon close examination. In some cases, filler may be used to eliminate more noticeable defects, but the ultimate goal is to create a smooth surface that appears even from a typical viewing distance.

3. Paiting:
A sufficient number of paint layers are applied to ensure even coverage, but slight tonal variations or texture irregularities may be visible on the surface. Priming and painting are carried out with medium quality standards in mind, ensuring the durability of the coating.

4. Quality Assessment:
The surface is evaluated under normal lighting conditions from a distance of about 1.5 meters. Small defects are allowed as long as they do not significantly impact the overall perception of the surface.

5. Application:
RYL 2 is suitable for residential spaces, offices, and other areas where a standard level of finishing is required. This is the most commonly used quality level because it balances affordability with good workmanship.

Conclusion:
RYL 2 aims for an acceptable level of finishing with some allowances for quality. Surfaces completed to this standard appear neat and meet most typical requirements for room finishing.

RYL 3 Quality Standard

RYL 3 is a quality standard for painting and finishing work that outlines the requirements for a basic level of finishing. This level is used in situations where high precision or perfect surface quality is not required, but functionality and durability of the coating are still important.

Quality characteristics of RYL 3 in painting work:
1. Surface Preparation:
Surface preparation is minimal. Irregularities and defects may be present and visible upon inspection, but they should not interfere with the primary function of the coating. Sanding and leveling are only performed where necessary to ensure the adhesion of the paint or coating.

2. Leveling and Sanding:
The surface may remain with noticeable defects and irregularities. The use of filler and leveling materials is minimal, applied only to eliminate the most obvious defects. The surface texture may be uneven, with visible traces of previous layers or other work.

3. Paiting:
The minimum number of paint layers is applied to achieve a coating that fulfills its protective or decorative functions. Color variations, brush or roller marks, and inconsistencies in paint layer thickness may be visible.

4. Quality Assessment:
The surface is inspected under normal lighting from a distance of approximately 2 meters. Visible defects are acceptable at this distance, provided they do not affect the functional characteristics of the coating. The main requirement is to ensure the surface's protection or its primary function, rather than its appearance.

5. Application:
RYL 3 is used in technical rooms, production areas, warehouses, basements, garages, and other places where aesthetic requirements are minimal.
This quality level is suitable for areas where the focus is on durability and protection rather than appearance.

Conclusion:
RYL 3 is a basic level of finishing designed for functional, but not necessarily aesthetically pleasing, spaces. It allows for significant deviations in surface quality while ensuring the coating performs its primary function, whether it be protection from corrosion, moisture, or other impacts.
